Deadline: 30 September 2016
Description:
The NATO Defense College (NDC) is pleased to announce a research opportunity for citizens of NATO member states: the NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellowship programme, named after the College’s founder, General Dwight D. Eisenhower.
The programme began in 2015; each year the NDC Research Division selects ‒ on a competitive basis ‒ three NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellows: 1 Senior Eisenhower Defence Fellow (for 4 months) and 2 Eisenhower Defence Fellows (3 months each). Each fellow receives a stipend to cover his/her travel and living expenses while conducting research at the NDC.
Applicants are invited to submit proposals reflecting the priorities and challenges for the Alliance as outlined in the 2010 Strategic Concept and the 2016 Warsaw Summit Declaration, by completing and forwarding the Application Form to the NDC Research Division. While not excluding other areas of research, in 2017 preference will be given to those proposals addressing the following topics: Russia, security and defence challenges on the Eastern and Southern Flanks of the Alliance, and relations with strategic Partners. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.
Partnership for Peace (PfP) Fellowships
Two fellowships are made available each year for applicants from PfP countries. Each fellowship lasts four months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of PfP countries, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals in the area of NATO and Euro-Atlantic security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.
Mediterranean Dialogue (MD) Fellowships
Two fellowships are also made available each year for applicants from MD countries. Each fellowship lasts four months and each fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of partner countries in the Mediterranean Dialogue, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals relating to NATO and Mediterranean security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.
Other Military Cooperation (OMC) / Partners Across the Globe (PAG)
One fellowship is also made available each year for applicants from OMC / PAG countries. This fellowship lasts four months and the fellow receives a stipend to cover his or her travel expenses and the costs of his or her stay in Rome while conducting research at the NDC. Applicants should be citizens of Partner countries, as specified in the Fellowship Terms and Conditions and the Application Form. They are invited to submit proposals relating to NATO and Global Security, by completing and forwarding their Application Form to the NDC Research Division. The full Terms and Conditions of the fellowship, as well as the Application Form, can be downloaded from this webpage.
Selection Procedure
The NDC Research Fellowship Selection Committee meets in October or November each year, to review all the applications received. A staff member of NDC Research Division may contact prospective candidates for further clarification of their applications before that date, but applicants should be aware that a final decision on their application will be made only when the Committee concludes the selection process (by 30 November). The Committee may select up to eight candidates for fellowship positions in the following calendar year: two candidates from PfP countries, two from MD countries, one from OMC/PAG countries and three from NATO countries for the NDC Eisenhower Defence Fellowship. Selected candidates will be notified in writing immediately thereafter and they will receive the latest version of the NDC Fellows’ Manual to prepare themselves for their stay at the College in Rome. Due to the large number of applicants, only candidates selected for the Fellowships will be contacted.
NOTE: Research proposals unrelated to NATO will not be taken into consideration.
